Fundamentals 1st

What It’s About:

Fundamentals 1st is a workshop for people who love photography and want to learn the building blocks to making great images and controlling their camera.

The concepts taught in this workshop are the bare bones of photography which were used decades ago by great photographers and are still used today by great photographers. Emphasis is placed on learning manual exposure by understanding aperture, shutter speed and ISO. Other concepts that will be discussed include camera settings (RAW vs. jpeg, White Balance, the Histogram, and color space), lens choice, composition, shooting techniques, and a brief discussion on post-processing.

I won’t be revealing a magic button on your camera that will turn you into Ansel Adams when you press it. We will, however, learn how to use our minds to control the camera and our hearts to create meaningful images.

Who This Workshop Is For:

Do you want to understand the basic concepts of photography?

Are you thinking about making photography a career?

Do you have a digital SLR, but have no idea how to use it?

Do you want to be able to control your camera?

Are you a mom or dad and just want to make great images of your kids?

If you answered yes to any of the above questions, then this workshop is for you. Whether you love to photograph people, landscapes, or objects, the principles taught in this workshop apply.

Hilaire’s a Senior!

So, the fact that Hilaire is a Senior means that I am getting up there in age. I have know this girl forever, really, I knew her from her day one. Her parents were my Sunday school teachers for years and Hilaire’s Dad was a big part of our youth group. When I was younger, I used to baby sit Hilaire and Meredith and stay with them when their parents were out of town. We had some good times! I didn’t realize how much I have missed them until I saw them. We got to reminisce about the time the girls drove or well, crashed the four wheeler into the woods and I thought I was going to be in big trouble. Luckily, I used my awesome four wheeling skills (really, I have none), to hop a few logs to get that thing out. So, I was so happy to see this fam once again. I couldn’t get over how grown up they are and how gorgeous they both are!! I told Meredith that she had 4 years to practice for pictures for when she is a senior. It was odd to look through the camera and still see the cute little faces and gestures that I remember Hilaire making even as a very small girl. But, the weird part is that she is all grown up. I had a hard time choosing which ones to share. She is just so pretty and I guess it was a little sentimental for me going through these. So, here is Hilaire!!

:: Phil + Morgan :: Engaged ::

This is Phil and Morgan and you guessed it, they are getting married. We had quite a little adventure on their engagement session in Raleigh a few weeks ago. We were concerned that it was going to rain, but it held out for us quite nicely. I do like the lighting when it is about to rain. It is all glowy and bouncy. These guys were a lot of fun, I mean they even brought their bikes. So, thanks guys for running around Raleigh with me! Can’t wait for next time!!!

Is it a little door, or just really big people? When we were downtown, Heather, my assistant, found this little random door, so we thought we would have some fun with it.

:: Ben + Lynn :: Engaged ::

A few weeks ago I travelled up to Currituck, NC to photograph Ben and Lynn, who are engaged to be married on September 25th! As you can see we went to the lighthouse in Currituck for some fun shots. It was actually a lot cooler than it looks. It was like one minute it was warm and the next it was cold. They were troopers. They dealt with the cool weather and they climbed a tree. They have mad tree climbing skills. I even got to get in a boat to take some shots! Ben had his brother (bless him) bring a boat over for us to use for some pictures. That was a lot of fun and a bit scary at the same time. I kept imaging myself dropping the camera over the side of the boat. So, congrats to these guys. I look forward to getting to know them even more this year.

:: Stephanie ::

This is just a very sweet girl. Her name is Stephanie and she is working on campus at East Carolina University with the campus ministry (VCM) that is an outreach of our church. She needed some pictures for her newsletters and all that good stuff so I was happy to go out and have some fun making her portraits. If you are an ECU student or even just a college student in the Pitt County area you should totally check out VCM. Even though I’m a big kid now, I went to VCM a few weeks ago to take some pictures for them and got to here an amazing speaker. It was such an energetic and positive environment. It made me feel like a college student again. I miss those days. Back to Stephanie…
